SUNY Online Teaching/UAlbany CDIT Instructional Designer (ID) Internship Program

The SUNY Albany department of Education Theory and Practice (ETAP) and the SUNY Online Teaching unit has partnered to offer their The Master of Science in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology (CDIT) program students a 3-credit and/or paid internship opportunity.

Applicants for the internship program must be recommended by the SUNY Albany ETAP department and be students in good standing within the department. While intended for CDIT program students, undergraduate, and PhD students in the ETAP department may also be considered. A strong demonstrated interest in online learning, online instructional design, online faculty development, online instructional technology is required. This internship is intended and best suited for those who intend careers in online instructional design.

Application for this internship program requires:

  1. A resume.
  2. References.
  3. A goals and expectations statement for the internship.
  4. An interview with the SUNY Online Teaching team.

ETAP’s objective is to enhance the appeal of their CDIT program with an opportunity to complete an internship at SUNY Online, in the award-winning, internationally recognized online teaching unit. The CDIT program offers current and prospective students an experiential learning opportunity – where the program provides opportunities to apply theoretical skills in the real world.

An internship at SUNY Online with the Online Teaching team provides the student with an opportunity to demonstrate to potential future employers that they have some related experience in the support of online faculty in higher education, which is a common prerequisite for positions in the field.

Logistics:

Internship: 3-credits in the CDIT program.

*Hours/timeframe/location:*10 hours per week, with one day in the SUNY Online offices in downtown Albany on the UAlbany semester calendar, August – December and January – May.

A paid internship opportunity is also possible and opportunities to work over the summer and holiday breaks.

Process:

  • Nomination: Interns can be nominated or recommended by SUNY Albany for participation in the program – contingent on SUNY Online needs and availability.
  • Project-based needs: SUNY Online Teaching may periodically have need for assistance with specific projects/activities. Nominations and applications may be sought for specific internship projects.

Physical location:  SUNY Online offices (10 North Pearl St. 2nd floor).

SUNY Albany contact: Peter Shea is the SUNY Albany internship admin and advisor, and the SUNY Online Teaching ID Internship program liaison.

The intern will:

  1. Propose the learning objectives for the internship, or review the SUNY Online Teaching list of projects/activities.
  2. Be required to keep an internship reflections blog documenting experiences and learning.
  3. Produce a final written report on lessons learned from the internship experience.
  4. Provide suggestions to improve the internship program for SUNY Online Teaching.
  5. Produce a blog post and video testimonial/reflection about the internship experience for the SUNY Online Teaching internship webpage.

Metrics for UAlbany’s success of the internship program will be:

  1. The intern’s self-assessment and written report.
  2. The SUNY Online Teaching report and satisfaction with the intern.
  3. Increased interest in the program due to the internship opportunity (applicant self reports; increase in applications).
  4. Interns report greater success in getting interviews and/or getting hired due to completion of internship (intern self report).

Metrics for SUNY Online’s success of the internship program will be:

  1. Intern’s contribution to the SUNY Online Teaching team.
  2. Enhanced productivity of SUNY Online Teaching team (additional useful work is completed).
  3. Increased ability to serve the needs of the campuses (because work is completed more efficiently or additional services can be provided, e.g., online course reviews etc.).
  4. Intern’s, UAlbany’s, and SUNY Online Teaching staff’s satisfaction with the program.
  5. Ease of supervision of the intern.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience teaching.
  2. Experience leading training.
  3. Interest in online teaching and training.
  4. Interest in online instructional design.
  5. Completed ETAP 640 – introduction to online teaching.
