Andre Mount is a professor of music theory at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, where he has taught core undergraduate music theory and aural skills courses as well as upper-division/graduate analysis courses since 2011. For the past four years, he has been teaching entirely online, adapting a decade’s worth of teaching materials and pedagogical strategies to match the unique challenges of asynchronous online learning.

Andre has also served as a SUNY Potsdam Online Faculty Fellow since the inauguration of the program in 2020. This initiative was established to support faculty with training and professional development as they navigate the potentially unfamiliar territory of distance learning as well as to provide peer review in the online course development process. In addition to peer mentoring and liaising between teaching faculty and support staff, he has co-designed and facilitated an online pedagogy credentialing course as well as numerous other professional development workshops.

Beyond his work in both brick-and-mortar and virtual classrooms, he is the author of several OER textbooks and study resources. These include Fundamentals, Function, and Form, a peer-reviewed music theory textbook (and accompanying workbook) released by Milne Publishing in 2020, and The Trained Ear, an online musicianship tool built using thousands of public-domain melodies, rhythms, and chord progressions.

“Distance education will be playing an increasingly important role for SUNY over the coming years and I am committed to ensuring that the growth and evolution of these programs continue to benefit our students in every way possible!”
