Jamie Votraw – New Online Teaching Intern
Meet Jamie Votraw, the Open SUNY Online Teaching Media Intern for 2018/19.
I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of education. I am a passionate teacher and learner, and I have always been an active member of the SUNY community. I earned a B.A. in Political Science and a B.S. in Communication at the SUNY College at Oneonta, and an M.A. in Communication from the University at Albany. While completing my Master’s degree, I was motivated to remain in academia and become an integral part of the teaching community through advanced studies in a doctoral program at the University at Albany.
Currently, I am a lecturer at the University at Albany and a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication. I teach undergraduate courses in public speaking, political communication, and mass communication. My doctoral studies are in the area of political communication, largely focused on relationship between politics, media and society. More specifically, I explore how the mass media influence political opinions and how new media technology impacts political participation and engagement. For example, in previous research, I have examined social media as a tool for enhancing citizen engagement, educational programs that promote political open-mindedness, and how partisan stereotypes affect political discussion, and the role of gender cues in political evaluations. For my dissertation, I am investigating the relationship between prolonged exposure to pro- and counter-attitudinal messages and attitude polarization, and the consequences of exposure to biased news on future media use behaviors.
In effort to become a better educator, I have recently joined the office of Online Teaching at Open SUNY as a media intern. In this position, I have the opportunity to work alongside experts in instructional design and faculty development. I am excited to improve my own online teaching abilities, as well as serve SUNY’s online teaching community through the many services provided by our office.
