Introducing our new Senior Instructional Designer, Allene Slating

Hello! I’m excited to introduce myself, Allene Slating, as the new Senior Instructional Designer on the SUNY Online Teaching team.

My journey in online education began by teaching English to learners around the world, primarily in support of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This experience shifted my career from media production to education, and it led me to SUNY Delhi, where I spent the past nine years supporting faculty and students both on campus and online. Most recently, I served as the Instructional Designer and Digital Learning Environment (DLE) Administrator, leading the transition from Moodle to Brightspace and supporting its use. I bring this campus-based perspective into my new role, where I aim to understand needs, identify opportunities, and advocate for user-centered solutions.

With a M.Ed. in Education and Technology from the University at Buffalo, I bring both technical expertise and a pedagogical understanding to support and enhance online learning across diverse settings. As an instructional designer, I have worked closely with faculty to ensure course quality and alignment with best practices in online learning. I have previously co-taught COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) projects with first-year SUNY students and groups in Mexico and Brazil. I also continue to adjunct a hybrid course at SUNY Delhi on integrating technology into education for pre-service educators. These experiences have shaped my passion for multimedia learning and information design, and I’m eager to deepen my knowledge and skills in these areas to create effective resources and engaging learning experiences.

Creating inclusive learning environments is also central to my approach, and I continually reflect on how I can improve accessibility and incorporate Universal Design for Learning principles. Always a learner, I am quick to sign up for trainings, webinars, and other opportunities to expand my knowledge and better help others. I am known for being patient, communicative, and organized – qualities that helped me earn the Chancellor’s Award in Professional Service at SUNY Delhi in 2022-2023.

Offline, I like to recharge by being artistic, riding motorcycles with my husband, spoiling the family dog Bill, and being surrounded by nature – evident by the many plants I have!

I’m very excited to be joining the talented SUNY Online Teaching team, and I look forward to collaborating with colleagues and campuses to strengthen and enhance online teaching and learning.
