AI as a Course Design Collaborator

What happens when instructional design expertise and artificial intelligence work together?

Recently, I had the opportunity to explore that question while developing a new Introduction to OSCQR self-paced course. Rather than fearing AI as a replacement for instructional design expertise, I approached it as a collaborator, that like any other tool, supported parts of the design process while I remained responsible for critical decisions, quality review, and learner-centered thinking.

Designing Videos with Intention: Reflections from OLC Innovate

In early March, I had the opportunity to attend OLC Innovate, a virtual conference centered on innovative ideas and best practices for online and digital learning. One session that particularly resonated with me was “Lights, Camera, Learn! Transforming Online Education Through Strategic Video Design” (Cisneros et al., 2026), a multimedia-focused presentation led by a team from Angelo State University and the American College of Education.
