Title: Creating a Student Orientation to Online Learning in Blackboard

Presenter: Kate Bohan, SUNY New Paltz

Description: If students are unfamiliar with how to approach and plan for taking an online course, and/or how to use the Learning Management System and other available instructional technology tools, then they are unlikely to be successful in taking an online course. This session will show how we created an online course in Blackboard that introduces students to the concept of online learning, while also demonstrating the tools they might use to accomplish different tasks in an online environment. Getting context and practice in a non-credit-bearing orientation may increase student engagement in online learning and reduce the stress and anxiety of taking classes in a different type of educational environment. Included in the session will be our goals for the roll out of this material, as well as an explanation of how we folded in an “achievement” process in Blackboard for students to be able to show faculty that they are familiar with the basic foundational skills.

Title: Using the Best Practices of Asynchronous Online Learning to Synchronous Online Learning

Presenter: Jeff Dugan, Finger Lakes Community College

Description: In response to the pandemic instructors were asked to engage in online learning that may have only taught face to face before. From the perspective of an instructional designer, who primarily works with “traditional” asynchronous online course work, the faculty relied on best practices from those online courses to create their synchronous online course. The best practices that we will be discussing will be universal design for learning and backwards design, as they both came to the forefront in designing the synchronous course work.

Title: SUNY Mental Health Initiative

Presenter: Leah Wentworth, SUNY System Administration

Description: As part a new plan to help address the uptick in mental health and wellness needs among college students due to the impact of COVID-19, SUNY has partnered with Thriving Campus to provide every student from SUNY’s colleges and universities with access to a network of more than 6,000 licensed mental health service providers. The mobile-friendly app, already utilized at two SUNY campuses, breaks down a number of crucial, often overlooked barriers that students frequently encounter in the process of reaching out for help. By streamlining and simplifying what can be a stressful and overwhelming process, and building synergy with local mental health providers, more students will be seamlessly connected with the specific help they need, when they need it.
