With many years of experience teaching public speaking and communication classes, I admit that I was skeptical to teach these types of courses in an online format. While public speaking and oral communication were typically performed in a face-to-face setting, the growth of communication through digital platforms created the perfect opportunity for change. Luckily, I participated in SUNY’s N2OL training several years ago and immediately recognized and embraced the tremendous advantages online learning provides for our diverse student population. I now teach classes in every modality, and each format has distinct benefits for students to complement their academic, professional, and personal goals and circumstances. The value of offering a variety of courses in a variety of modalities continues to grow and each semester I strive to provide students with creative materials, engaging discussions and opportunity for growth and self-reflection. Communicating clearly, confidently, and competently with one person or a large audience takes place in both face-to-face, remote, and asynchronous settings, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to help students improve their communication skills and knowledge in the place they spend much of their time… online.
