Jennifer R. Shloming, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). She has been a faculty member since 2006 in the Science and Mathematics Department and teaches both online and in-person courses. She received a B.A. from Cornell University then a M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. from Teachers College at Columbia University. Dr. Shloming completed the Teaching with Technology Certificate Program at FIT in 2017 and began SUNY COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) training in January 2019 to intertwine a global presence and perspective to courses.

“Experiencing frustration while I was a student taking online courses fueled my path to teaching courses online. I want to make sure my own students are able to take my online courses and not feel any burden or annoyance with the process, but rather enjoy all the added extras that can be applied to the online setting. Teaching mathematics courses to students can be a challenge in any setting, but teaching online can enhance the experience and benefit both the students and instructor!”

“Some of my favorite, personalized touches for my online courses include choosing the look and feel of the website by customizing the theme of our course site and embedding Spark pages; using relevant and interesting real-life examples and data; creating videos, maintaining a Course FAQ; and utilizing other available technology.”

“It is important to look for tools that can supplement and strengthen the material in the course. I attend and even speak at conferences and workshops relating to the topic of online instruction and various technology and tools that I use in my own courses.  I look forward to the future of online learning!”
