Open SUNY Online Teaching Ambassador 2019: Alfred State – Lisa Boyle
Lisa Boyle, RHIT, is currently an Instructor in the Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Alfred State College of Technology – SUNY. She graduated from the HIT program at Alfred in 1993 and then worked in the healthcare field for a little over 20 years. During that time she taught as an adjunct for the HIT program both on campus and online. In August 2013, Lisa returned to Alfred State College as a full-time Instructional Support Assistant, was promoted to an Instructional Support Associate position, and then in Fall 2017 moved into her current full-time Instructor position.
The HIT program at Alfred State College is a completely online program (with the exception of student internships), and our program typically has a nontraditional student population. Lisa strives to make the online learning environment straightforward for her students, so they can easily find the information in the course they need to complete their assignments and learn effectively. She is not afraid to try to new tools/ideas in her online classrooms in order for her students to be successful in their learning career.
I want my courses to appeal to a wide variety of learners, so I try to incorporate different learning tools to help my students be successful. I try to create a sense of online community within my courses, to make the students feel engaged with me and other students. My students are important to me, and I try to give them different methods of teaching so they can all learn what they need to get a career in this field.
