SUNY Online Teaching Ambassador 2023: Genesee – Amy Conley

Amy Conley is a Professor of Accounting and Business at Genesee Community College (GCC) and has been a full-time faculty member for fourteen years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from St. John Fisher College and a Master’s in Business Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology. Ms. Conley is a Certified Public Accountant. She transitioned into academics after 15 years of working in the public and private sector. Her work experience includes serving as the chief financial officer of a major subsidiary of a public energy company for eight years.

Ms. Conley has extensive curriculum experience. She served as Co-Chairperson of GCC’s curriculum committee for nine years and is now an active member of GCC’s Educational Initiatives committee. As a co-advisor of GCC’s Business Creators Club, she works closely with students to organize activities that promote entrepreneurship. Ms. Conley is a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Ms. Conley has been teaching online since 2010. Like her traditional classes, her focus in online classes is to create a learner centered classroom that motivates students to improve both their technical and communication skills. Over the past three years, she has also developed and delivered multiple classes in a hyflex format.  The growth of online and hyflex class offerings has supported GCC’s development of accounting and business microcredentials.

Online teaching provides us with the wonderful opportunity to meet students where they are on their educational journey. Improvements in technology, such as the ability to meet with students on Zoom, have made it easier to form strong personal relationships with my online students.

With the growth of remote job opportunities, rewards for being a successful online learner are greater than ever. Developing course work that helps prepares our students to be successful in the workforce is very fulfilling.
