Open SUNY Online Teaching Ambassador 2019: Herkimer – Jason Brown

Mr. Brown has a B.A. in English from Binghamton University and an M.A. in Literature from Western Washington University. He has taught at Herkimer County Community College since 2004 and is an Assistant Professor of English.

In reflecting on online teaching, Mr. Brown states, “I have been teaching composition online since 2009 and was an early adopter of OER in 2014 when the college was the recipient of the Achieving the Dream grant.  I try to engender student-centered learning through the open access that OER  provides in the plethora of quality materials that are available for students.  I have found, in particular, Excelsior College’s OWL site to be of extreme value in my writing courses.  The materials therein are extremely useful in terms of providing comprehensive coverage for various rhetorical modes and citation methods and are presented in a very digestible manner.  The site is also replete with helpful examples, walkthroughs and videos.”
