Open SUNY Online Teaching Ambassador 2018 – Corning: George Hurlburt

George Hurlburt

George Hurlburt earned his BA in Mathematics from SUNY Potsdam in 1989 and an MS in Mathematics from Kansas State University in 1992. He taught full-time in Kansas for 6 years before moving to Corning Community College in 2000.

While at Corning, he has chaired multiple committee and served as Mathematics Department Chair for 6 years. He has been very active with the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, giving multiple presentations and their annual conference and serving on the board for 7 years, including serving as President, 2007-2008 and 2017-2018. He has also been very active with the American Mathematical Associate of Two-Year Colleges, currently serving as the NE Representative to the Innovative Teaching and Learning Committee, webmaster, and co-author of the AMATYC “Proctored Testing For Courses Taught At a Distance” Position Statement.

I have used online learning systems for over 20 years, and have taught online classes for nearly 20 years. I have greatly enjoyed seeing how getting information to students in online classes has changed in that time, starting with typed notes posted for students to read, moving into videos for students to watch, and now creating interactive videos for students. I believe that online learning serves a very important learning opportunity today. There are many students with family and work commitments that make it impossible for them to take classes in a tradition setting, and online learning meets those student’s needs.
