“The study of regulation and public policy toward natural resources and the environment can include a broad examination of the role of government in a mixed/capitalist economy.  What role does public policy play in a market that is largely private and profit-seeking?  Landmark events in the area of natural resource and environmental regulation and policy include the Clean Air Act, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency.  Specific regulatory and policy problems in areas such as water and air quality, energy consumption, transportation, biodiversity, and carbon emissions are investigated and analyzed in depth.  Specific regulatory approaches are examined and contrasted.  For example, in the US, a more bureaucratic and confrontational approach to regulation and policy developed, while much of Europe adopted a more incentive-based, market-driven model.”
