Advocacy and Activism

MenoukhaCaseMenoukha Case, Center for Distance Learning, SUNY Empire State College writes:

“Environmental advocacy and activism may take many forms, from art to politics to education to grass roots organizing and more, but generally, activists “do something” about their concerns, while advocates speak for or about them. However they do overlap and are related. You can explore those relationships at: http://www.dosomething.org/training/activismandadvocacy/actvism-vs-advocacy For example, Wangari Maathai is an activist whose advocacy was formalized upon her election to Parliament http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wangari_Maathai

“Environmental Advocacy and Activism studies can be undertaken from a variety of approaches. One can trace the development of a grass root movement; one can study connections between movements. One can study the effectiveness of diverse activist strategies. One can trace case laws and legislation that ensued as activism raised awareness.  Or, one can combine all of these in studying a specific concern (hydrofracking), environmental element (water), or site (Cancer Alley).”
