Cayuga Community College is redesigning our developmental math course sequence, starting with Elementary Algebra, where the traditional classroom lecture format is replaced with an individualized, actively engaged approach to learning mathematics using technology. The content is modularized where students can work at a guided self-pace, with a focus on content mastery. In effect, students may complete the modules, and hence the course, as early as they are able, or they may follow the guided pace and complete the course throughout the intended semester. This project will further develop materials to assist students with transitioning into a traditional math sequence.

Automating Production of PowerPoint-Based Algorithm Visualization Teaching Materials

The primary goal of the project is to build software and the sharing platform to increase the availability and accessibility of easily adoptable, standardized PowerPoint (PPT) (a Microsoft technology) presentation based data structures and algorithms (DSAs) visualization materials. The proposed approach is expected to promote standardization, centralization and reuse of DSA teaching materials, as well as preparedness of DSA teaching. This project will refine the generators that have been prototyped and implement new DSA generators, focusing upon those taught at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs). An automated database-and-dispatcher-driven cyber platform, which releases end users from the hassle of running generators, will also be refined. The project will be evaluated at a small scale and the outcomes of the project will be disseminated at the national computer science education conferences.

Using Visual Communication Tools to Enhance Teaching and Learning

The goal of this project is to design, implement, evaluate, and disseminate an innovative and replicable training model of integrating visual communication tools for teacher candidates at SUNY Oswego. The objectives include: 1. Selected visual communication tools will be explored with participants of this project; 2. Selected teaching cases which parallel objective one will be organized as a training approach for participants to better prepare technology integration across curriculum; 3. Task teams will be developed for working on collaborative projects; 4. The project will be tracked and evaluated for continuous improvement, adaptation, expansion as well as replication.

Supporting the needs of 21st Century Learners: Faculty Development with Tools of Engagement

Faculty Instructional Technologists at SUNY Empire State College are now in the process of creating a Faculty Development Program to be rolled out to ESC’s seven regional centers in the Spring of 2013. The program will consist of four module-based blended training units which will be designed to introduce ESC faculty and staff to several types of Web 2.0 technology tools (social media, document sharing, etc…) that have been shown to increase student learning and engagement in blended studies. Participants will engage in pre-assessment and post-assessment dialogue to allow researchers to determine the value of engagement.
