In a world dominated by digital technology, the Internet of Things (IoT) is changing almost all aspects of our lives. Unfortunately, we still lack a dedicated platform that can support experimental IoT education covering a wide set of topics, including smart homes, personalized medicine and healthcare, intelligent transportation, manufacturing, precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, and military applications, among others. To address this challenge, in this project we propose to develop SUNY OpenIoTLab aiming towards federating the experimental IoT education resources available over the SUNY system and opening the resources to SUNY students. In this project, starting from University at Buffalo (UB) and SUNY Polytechnic Institute, OpenIoTLab will federate three IoT platforms available at UB and make them open to SUNY Poly students. These platforms include i) UB IoT Lab for LoRa and SigFox wireless networks; ii) UB NeXT, an extendable network optimization, emulation and deployment platform for programmable wireless networks; and iii) UB-ANC, UB’s airborne networking and communications ecosystem for simulation-based drone swarm and drone networking research. A set of class experiments and projects will be designed based on OpenIoTLab by the joint team from UB and SUNY Poly. A user-friendly web portal will be designed for instructors and students to conduct experiments over SUNY OpenIoTLab. If we are successful, OpenIoTLab will be extended over the whole SUNY system.
