Project Abstract:

Playful Narratives / Playing with Stories will provide students and faculty with an interactive, gamified OER textbook for an Introduction to Creative Writing course.
Through this project, I aim to develop an accessible, interdisciplinary OER textbook (using a CC-BY Creative Commons license) that would be appropriate for the introductory level creative writing class, featuring games-based learning units and multimodal writing techniques, relevant for writing in the digital age. Through embodied play and collaborative worldbuilding, students can better understand who their character is (e.g. their intersectional identity) and how they operate within the larger, collaboratively defined setting. Additionally, students will learn how to write a branching narrative/game using free software (like Twine, Ink) to create multiple pathways for their stories, a common feature of games and multimodal writing. Through this games-based approach, students will learn important interpersonal communication skills and relevant metacognitive skills (applying these ideas to their own lives) in addition to improving their creativity, metaliteracy, and writing skills.
