Fredonia

2012

Tier One

Project Abstract:

As Fredonia continues to expand it’s offerings of blended and 100% online courses and with the adoption of the flipped classroom model, the need to create and share quality online audio and video recordings has grown. In addition, SUNY’s initiative to create an Open SUNY will require more faculty to participate in multimedia creations. The Professional Development Center and the ITS-Mulitimedia team have been working together to piloted, implemented and support iTunes U, Echo360, and Elluminate Live! on campus. These tools have made it easier for instructors who are both novice and experienced multimedia creators to produce content for courses.

One piece of common feedback from instructors using these tools is the availability of spaces that include good lighting and acoustics along with the modern technology needed to create a quality recording. This funding would allow for a single multimedia recording suite to be built and then guide the creation of other multimedia rooms both at Fredonia and other SUNY institutions.

In addition to the use by faculty both the Professional Development Center and the Online Learning Office staff will use this room to create tutorials on technology and pedagogical topics. Using the expertise of the staff in these departments and the Professional Developments Associates, tutorials will be recorded and shared publicly through Fredonia’s instance of iTunes U. These recordings, along with the existing content, will be available to anyone accessing iTunes U and can be shared across SUNY.

Usage metrics are already collected through ANGEL, Echo360 and iTunes U and we will continue to collect data using these methods. Faculty members using these tools will be asked to provide student and faculty feedback on the impact of the multimedia in the course. A feedback form has been previously used in several courses and will be revised and distributed to participating faculty and students.

Project Outcome:

Lab was created to support the cross platform content. Photographs of the lab, along with links to podcasts created and tutorials are available.
