Accessibility in the Classroom: Creating Compliant Digital Objects

Suffolk County Community College

Description:

Training faculty in creating accessible content at Suffolk County Community College has been a major undertaking. With almost 2000 faculty and administrators the Center of Innovative Pedagogy cannot schedule enough training workshops with its three staff members. In addition, a one hour workshop is not adequate for this type of training as individual needs are different and the process to accomplish the desired outcomes are different within different types of content objects. A need to offer self-directed training became apparent. A lot of research went into developing and finding appropriate content for this open source course. Blackboard Open Educational Resource provided much of the content, explaining what accessibility is, other open content was found, and some developed to instruct participants in creating accessible content. Course topics include Universal Design, Accessibility for Online Learning, Assistive Technology, Learning Styles, and Creating Accessible Content. The idea is to offer each participant an opportunity and choices. Each module will contain an assessment. If the participant chooses to take the assessment they will receive a certificate. The College's goal includes training all faculty members in creating accessible content content to be used in all classroom environments.
