Buffalo State Butler Library Research Assistance Modules

Buffalo State University

Description:

These modules assist students with library research strategies. They can be referenced as many times as the student likes, and they can serve as a useful tool and guide. Additionally, they also support online asynchronous programs and any course with an online delivery modality. Butler Librarians teach over 150 workshop sessions annually to individual courses teaching students how to research, cite, and utilize the academic library subscription resources available to them. Online programs do not afford the opportunity for classroom instruction; these modules serve as a replacement for these workshops. Faculty can also assign these modules to their students. Upon successful completion, students receive an email with confirmation of a Brightspace Badge being earned. These emails are powered using Brightspace Intelligent Agents that are automated. Faculty also have the choice of receiving Brightspace exports that they can import the content into their course shells. This way, the quizzing and interactive components can be attached to the gradebook. More importantly, the content is licensed under an open Creative Commons license, allowing them to revise, retain, reuse, remix, and redistribute the content as an OER.

In a collaboration between Instructional Design & Distance Learning (IDDL) and Butler Library, these modules were created, piloted, and now they are available to every student and faculty through Brightspace as an organization. The content has been vetted to make sure it holds to the highest standards of accessibility using the standards of OSCQR review. It was piloted for twelve months in eighteen different course sections. Currently, there are five modules/badges available: APA Citations & Formatting, Popular vs Scholar Sources, Using Library Databases, MS Word & APA Formatting, and Creating a Literature Review. We are planning to continue creating content based on pedagogical and campus needs. IDDL has provided Butler Library with excellent training in Brightspace in order to make this initiative possible. Additionally, IDDL has created the infrastructure in Brightspace that delivers the content to students.

The content in the modules was primarily created with Brightspace features including quizzing with automated feedback. The badging feature allows students to receive confirmation of successful completion, and these badges can be added to a Brightspace profile. Badges are assigned an image that resembles an award, these images were created using Canva and are unique to each individual module. Tutorial videos were created using Camtasia non-linear video editing software that engage students with visuals, assisting them in understanding and absorbing the content. Contact information of librarians is available in the modules, assuring online students that Butler Librarians are available to assist them virtually. Documentation is also included so students can download such tools as an APA cheat sheet or a literature review matrix. A supplementary and informational website is available for students and faculty to visit and learn best practices for these modules.

While these modules were created to primarily support online modalities, we have found that many faculty who teach traditional, in-person delivery are interested in including this content in their Brightspace shells. Sometimes the completion of the modules is an assigned task, other times faculty choose to have them as optional or extra credit exercise.

  1. My grad school advisor included some of these modules in her courses, and they were very helpful, particularly since most of my classmates were returning to school after a number of years. Great work!

  2. Master Librarian Hulsman’s Brightspace modules are a masterclass in student support! These accessible, Brightspace modules (and their progressions) provide elite library research strategies and seamless tech integration. With automated badging and expert virtual tutoring, they offer asynchronous programs a gold-standard replacement for in-person workshops. Although, he was available to random questions from students who felt intimidated by the technology. This was a truly an essential, high-impact academic resource, particularly for my multiple graduate level course.
