Panelists:
Dr. Simone Reynolds serves as the Director of Online Learning and Instructional Innovation in the School of Public Health at SUNY Downstate. In her 10 years as a SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University faculty member in the School of Public Health, Dr. Reynolds has had the privilege to work with dynamic learners and superb faculty. In 2016, Dr. Reynolds designed her very first asynchronous online Epidemiology course. Today, she endeavors to ensure that the design of all her Epidemiology courses allows online learners to have an equally engaging and rewarding experience as those in her face-to-face classes. Dr. Reynolds continues to receive high praise from students taking her introductory and advanced epidemiology courses. During the current coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Reynolds championed the transition of our faculty to remote teaching and worked with our faculty to mitigate the dip in the change curve. She has experience developing, implementing, and managing online programs, and has been responsive to the current academic climate in which adult learners request more flexible learning options that do not fit the traditional mold of the 20th-century learner. She has created learner-centered environments for HyFlex and flipped classroom models as well as asynchronous online designs to meet this demand. Dr. Reynolds holds two certificates in Online Education – a Professional Certificate in Online Education and a Certificate in Online Education Administration, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a BS, in Biology from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, an MPH in Epidemiology from New York Medical College School of Public Health, and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health.
Rachael Hagerman is an Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University in the College of Health Professions. She has 15 years experience in designing and implementing digital curricula in the clinical laboratory sciences at both at the community college and university level, including fully-online, blended, and hyflex modalities. Rachael also extensive experience in course, programmatic, and institutional assessment and accreditation having served as a site visitor for programmatic accreditation (NAACLS), and served as assessment coordinator and member of multiple Middle States workgroups at SUNY Broome Community College.
Steve Schneider is a professor teaching Information Design, Communications and Political Science at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. Steve has taught at SUNY Poly since 1991, and began teaching online in 1997. His career has also included stints as an Interim Dean and an Interim Provost. Steve joined the hyflex community last year, and taught three classes using this approach during the 2022-2023 academic year. He is currently exploring the implementation of tools enabling students to write and read hypertextually.
Mark D’Arcy is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at SUNY Alfred State College. He has a BA in Mathematics and an MSEd in Mathematics Education from Alfred University and an MS in Mathematical Sciences with a concentration in Operations Research from Clemson University. Mark has taught at ASC since the Fall of 2001. He has been a pioneer at ASC in the areas of fully online courses, courses using all OER materials, and synchronous online and HyFlex courses.
Jodilynn Greico, like most modern-day academics, wears many hats in her job(s) at Rockland Community College. She is an Assistant Professor of English, the Academic Director for the RCC High School Programs, the RCC liaison for both the East Ramapo Smart Scholars and Hudson Valley P-Tech, and was for many years the department coordinator for Developmental English. Jodilynn has more than two decades of experience teaching English language and literature, and is devoted to fostering student-centered, culturally responsive classrooms. Her research areas include dual enrollment as an imperative for diversity, equity, and inclusion, meta-teaching pedagogy, and literary responses to incurable disease. She is a 2021 recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and is a proud graduate of both the State University of New York at Albany and the University of Maryland at College Park.
Liz Brownell, Professor of Graphic Design at Finger Lakes Community College is no stranger to technology. Her whole career, both in industry (graphic designer at Wegmans Advertising) and in academia, has been dependent on remaining on the cutting edge. When the pandemic upended traditional teaching practices, she went to great lengths to create an equally engaging experience for her students. Having already leveraged VoiceThread in her online class, Liz knew there were options for rich dialog about art making in the virtual environment. Liz has spent three semesters teaching Hyflex classes, while also teaching in all other modalities. As Coordinator of the Graphic Design and Fine Art programs and Co-Coordinator of ArtSpace36, she has used these modalities for classes as well as workshops and gallery talks. When Liz isn’t teaching she is working at ArtSpace and coordinates community partnerships, including a biweekly in-person/remote Create + Connect workshop in collaboration with The Community Support center a not-for-profit organization in the local community. More recently she has developed, with the Community Support Center, a community gathering on Thursday evenings for teens and young adults to create and express themselves in a safe and supportive environment. She received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2012 and is also a proud SUNY Oswego Art Department graduate.
