\nPresenter<\/strong>: Dr. Elena Gortcheva, University of Maryland University College
\nDescription<\/strong>: The NUTN Distance Education Innovation Award recognizes an individual or group that has developed an innovative program or practice that contributes to the field of distance education, in the context of a new or ongoing program, student or support services, pedagogy, faculty development and support or technology. A 2016 NUTN Distance Education Innovation Award finalist, UMUC\u2019s Master of Science in Data Analytics program, managed by Dr. Gortcheva, is an innovative, project-based and career-focused program that responds to the growing student interest in the field of Data Analytics and meets the demand from potential employers knowledgeable in data analytics. The curriculum is based on the skills involved in data analytics with input from key employers from corporate and government spheres as well as industry associations. The MSDA program advances online learning by including a number of innovative approaches in developing a multidisciplinary program involving both technical and managerial skills that are often not included in a typical Master\u2019s program. A key component of the program is building technical and business management skills through the use of open source tools. In addition, the technical skills are delivered using hands-on laboratories in a virtual environment. The program\u2019s overall approach of utilizing low cost tools and services has increased the student learning experience and can be replicated by any program and\/or institution.<\/p>\n

\nTitle:<\/strong> JSU-EdReady Math Pathway & Fast Forward Algebra<\/a>
\nPresenters:<\/strong> Courtney Peppers-Owen, Jacksonville State University
\nDescription<\/strong>: The Shirley Davis Award for Excellence in Blended Learning recognizes partnerships that have demonstrated impact from the collaboration and integration of perspectives and resources in an initiative or program. The 2016 NUTN Shirley Davis Award recognized JSU\u2019s innovative approach to address math readiness for students from diverse, inequitable backgrounds placed into college remedial math courses. In partnership with The NROC Project<\/a>, JSU piloted, tested and adapted NROC open education resources, which led to a customized online math assessment and adaptive learning tool called EdReady. EdReady measures students\u2019 math knowledge and then creates an individualized study path for students to complete in order to prepare for college-level mathematics. Out of this emerged the development of the JSU-EdReady Math Pathway as well as the blended classroom use of EdReady in the accelerated course model, Fast Forward Algebra. Students unable to master all topics in their EdReady path, or those who prefer a classroom environment, take Fast Forward Algebra, which combines basic and intermediate algebra into one semester and flips the classroom using EdReady.\u00a0Accelerating the time frame for remediation places students into college-level math more quickly, saving time and financial aid.\u00a0The collaboration between the NROC Project and Jacksonville State University has created an innovative and effective approach to developmental math that can be used as a model for colleges and universities nationwide.<\/p>\n
