Open Education Week is an annual celebration and opportunity for those working in Open Education across SUNY to actively share their achievements and learn about what others are achieving worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Open Education Week was launched in 2012 by Open Education Global as a collaborative, community-built open forum. Every year SUNY Online helps raise awareness by highlighting innovative open education successes across our SUNY campuses. OE Week provides practitioners, educators, and students with an opportunity to build a greater understanding of open educational practices and be inspired by the wonderful work being developed by the community around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Monday, March 4, 2024<\/b>

\n<\/span>Title: Using Generative AI for developing\/updating Coursera courses<\/span>
\n<\/span>Presenter: Valeri Chukhlomin, SUNY Empire State University<\/span>
\n<\/span>Description: This presentation will demonstrate how leveraging Generative AI tools like ChatGPT Plus, Claude-2, Eleven Labs, D-ID and many others can significantly streamline the course development process. Drawing from experience as the author of six Coursera courses, the presenter will showcase how these technologies can reduce both costs and development time by about 4-5 times, transforming the traditionally resource-intensive task of course creation and updating. The session will also highlight the importance of cultivating Generative AI awareness among learners, marking a new era in efficient and effective online education.

\n<\/span>Description: <\/span>This presentation will center on how an instructor replaced required discussion board posts with social annotations of documents in the public domain. The resulting discussion of the texts was more lively, and students appreciated having ready access to the texts.

\n<\/i><\/b>Title: Beyond office hours: Bridging gaps in mental and medical college health care through incorporating 24\/7 telemedicine services
\n<\/span>Presenter: Marisa Bisiani, Stony Brook University
\n<\/span>Description: Explore the transformative impact of 24\/7 telemedicine services on college health as we explore our innovative partnership to provide continuous care. In this presentation, we will share how Stony Brook University, a large public research university, integrated these services as a valuable tool in the delivery of care. We will outline step by step considerations in the use of vendors and the strategy we used to implement a telemedicine program that coexists with in-person care. The implementation of continuous telemedicine services that extends beyond traditional office hours requires careful planning, ensuring students have immediate access to high quality medical and behavioral health support whenever they need it. We will demonstrate how our collaboration is addressing gaps in mental and medical healthcare for students. Lessons learned, and the potential for revolutionizing student wellness through seamless, around-the-clock medical and behavioral\u00a0 healthcare services will be explored. In an industry where demands for accessible and comprehensive care are growing for safety, health, and wellness, this presentation will provide participants with creative and innovative healthcare solutions.

\n<\/span>Description: OER and open textbooks are a huge benefit to our students, but is a big project to tackle, especially on top of teaching & research. Milne Open Textbooks provides support and publishing services to SUNY faculty throughout the authoring and publishing process. This presentation will go over Milne Open Textbook’s recent proposal process update, provide advice for planning for an OER project, and showcase the services we provide through a few of our recent publications.

\n<\/i><\/b>Title: Open and Updated: Using OER for criminal justice courses
\n<\/span>Presenter: Casey L. Ryan, Hudson Valley Community College
\n<\/span>Description: Laws and criminal justice policies often change during a semester. Using a traditional text with a substantial cost means faculty may feel obligated to rely on the traditional text. Traditional texts may be in use for years without updates. With OER, faculty can update the course as needed and students benefit from real world examples of current policies and laws. Using OER ensures that students receive updated information on the current status of the criminal justice system agencies, laws, and policies. The presentation will focus on student outcomes and response to using OER and up to date resources in criminal justice courses.
