{"id":986,"date":"2015-02-02T14:10:16","date_gmt":"2015-02-02T20:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/online.suny.edu\/onlineteaching\/?page_id=986"},"modified":"2020-11-30T10:57:57","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T16:57:57","slug":"core","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/online.suny.edu\/onlineteaching\/online-competency-development\/core\/","title":{"rendered":"Core"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Core Online Competency Development<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>For whom is this PD intended:\u00a0<\/b><b>New Online Practitioners<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New online practitioners who have been identified by their campus to develop and\/or teach a specific course in a specific semester online, or those that have determined that online learning is for them.<\/li>\n<li>Any instructor identified in SUNY Online Signature degree programs that has never taught online.<\/li>\n<li>New online instructional designers, technologists, faculty developers, librarians, etc., who will support online faculty in online course design, or online teaching, and need to develop a strong foundation and understanding of core online competency development for those designing and facilitating online instruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We have identified 3 types of New Online Practitioners needing core online competency development:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Online Course Developers:<\/b> Faculty that will develop an online course: Course Developers work with an online instructional designer, and are provided professional development\u00a0and a research-based online course template to quick start their online course design.<\/li>\n<li><b><b>Online\u00a0<\/b>Course Facilitators:<\/b> Faculty that will teach an online course from a master course, or a SUNY Online Signature Program team-designed course. Course Instructors teach online courses that were created by others, or that were team developed, where the instructor may, or may not have been the SME in the online course design.<\/li>\n<li><b><b>Online\u00a0<\/b>Instructional Designers:<\/b> New or aspiring Online Instructional Designers\/Technologists including multimedia developers, faculty developers, and librarians.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Objectives\/Goals for this PD:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the\u00a0<b>Online\u00a0<\/b><b>Course Developer<\/b>: Develop online practitioners that can design effective online teaching and learning environments.<\/li>\n<li>For both the\u00a0<b>Online\u00a0<\/b><b>Course Developer and\u00a0<b>Online\u00a0<\/b><\/b><strong>Course Facilitator: <\/strong>Online practitioners that are well prepared to be successful in online learner-centered engaging and interactive teaching and learning environments.<\/li>\n<li>For the\u00a0<b><b>Online\u00a0<\/b>Instructional Designer <\/b>models: Online practitioners that are well prepared to be successful supporting the design and facilitation of online learner-centered engaging and interactive teaching and learning environments by understanding core online competency development for online developers and\/or online facilitators. .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>High Level Overview of Competencies \/Skills: \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the\u00a0<b>Online\u00a0<\/b><b>Course Developer<\/b>: Develop skills and experience in effective online course design.<\/li>\n<li>For the\u00a0<b>Online\u00a0<\/b><b>Course Developer,\u00a0<b>Online<\/b><\/b><strong>\u00a0Course Facilitator, and\u00a0<b><b>Online\u00a0<\/b>Instructional Designer <\/b>models: <\/strong>: Develop skills and solid foundational understanding of effective online pedagogies, teaching and learning practices, and theory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Core Competencies: N2OL Course Developer<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><b>Online: Being an online learner (REFLECT)<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gain familiarity with an online course environment, participate in an online discussion (question assumptions, talk about concerns), draft a course profile<\/li>\n<li>Write learning objectives, observe exemplar courses, \u00a0interact with exemplar online faculty (focus on course design)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><b>Welcoming and Orienting your online students (CONNECT)<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Building a framework for success: Social Presence: designing for a class community, \u00a0setting expectations<\/li>\n<li>Deconstructed syllabus, schedule, contact, evaluation, welcome, introductions, profiles, ice-breaker, learning objectives, draft modules, question area, talk with the professor, Bulletin Board,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><i>The first 2 &#8211; three weeks<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><b>Learner-Centered Online Learning Design (ORGANIZE &amp; BUILD)<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning activities design: UDL principles, content, interaction, feedback\/assessment.<\/li>\n<li>formula for design = objective + content\/activity + feedback\/assessment<\/li>\n<li>designing rubrics, and examples\/models<\/li>\n<li>designing group and collaborative activities<\/li>\n<li>designing course closure<\/li>\n<li>Formative course quality rubric<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><b>Guiding Online Learning and Managing your Online Course (REFINE and IMPLEMENT)<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Announcements and regular communications<\/li>\n<li>Facilitating community<\/li>\n<li>Monitoring and modeling for students: interaction, tone and corrective feedback<\/li>\n<li>Responsiveness to questions<\/li>\n<li>Timely feedback<\/li>\n<li>Facilitating and guiding interaction, diagnosing misperception, deeper learning<\/li>\n<li>Monitor Assessments and provide prompt feedback &#8211; using the gradebook<\/li>\n<li>Wrapping up the course to provide closure to the community<\/li>\n<li>Collecting descriptive feedback<\/li>\n<li>Tips from exemplar online faculty on online teaching and course management &#8211; (provided by the campus).<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity to observe exemplar online courses in a variety of disciplines.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunities to talk to or gain benefits from the experiences of exemplar online faculty.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity to participate as a peer course reviewer.Opportunity to have course peer reviewed.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity for ID course review summatively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Course Developer:<\/b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>A research-based template to quick start faculty with an effective online course design.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity to work with their campus-based ID\/faculty developer to support online course development and online course facilitation. (provided by the campus). (Note: Course Design Consultation services may supplement this model that relies on ID campus-based ID services).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Course Facilitator:<\/b><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Series of workshops in a variety of formats to gain online teaching and course management competencies.<\/li>\n<li>Opportunity to work with a faculty developer\/ID to support best practices in online course facilitation and understand the online course design. (provided by the campus.)<\/li>\n<li>High level understanding of effective online course design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Expected results: <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Those <b>interested<\/b> will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of online teaching and learning in the SUNY Online context and have more information to determine if online teaching is for them, and what they can expect as far as developing and\/or delivering their own online course.
