This includes any digital\/online course materials, resources, content you may use in your instruction.\u00a0While your learning management system (LMS) likely has built-in web accessibility features and functionality, and may have tools to help you check, or ensure the accessibility of your digital content within the LMS, <strong>it is important that you ensure and maintain the accessibility of any online content you use or create for your online instruction, regardless of where it is located.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check with your campus-based help resources for policies, procedures, and guidelines for ensuring web accessibility compliance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips to Improve the Accessibility of Your Online Content<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use <strong>heading styles or tags<\/strong> to reflect the actual organization of the page for those using screen readers.<\/li>\n<li>Use\u00a0<strong>high-contrast colors, <\/strong>such as dark text on a light background, to make online content easier to read. Use <strong>bold \/italic<\/strong> for emphasis, rather than color alone.<\/li>\n<li>Use simple and descriptive <strong>alt-text for images<\/strong> to make online content accessible to people using screen readers.<\/li>\n<li>Enable <strong>captions<\/strong> or include a <strong>transcript <\/strong>for any audio or video content. Use <strong>live-caption<\/strong> features for synchronous meetings.<\/li>\n<li>Create <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/create-accessible-pdfs-064625e0-56ea-4e16-ad71-3aa33bb4b7ed#:~:text=In%20File%20Format%2C%20use%20the,Select%20Export\"><strong>accessible PDFs<\/strong><\/a> to ensure that the online content is accessible via screen readers.<\/li>\n<li>Create <a href=\"http:\/\/webaim.org\/techniques\/tables\/data\"><strong>accessible tables<\/strong><\/a> to ensure that the online content is accessible via screen readers.<\/li>\n<li>Use\u00a0<strong>descriptive labels and text for hyperlinks<\/strong> (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/online.suny.edu\/onlineteaching\/\">SUNY Online website<\/a>, not just &#8220;click here!&#8221;) for linked documents and resources. This makes for a cleaner reading experience for those viewing or listening with a screen reader.<\/li>\n<li>Use <strong>accessibility checkers<\/strong> to help you identify areas in your digital content that need to be addressed. Start out with an <strong>accessible template<\/strong> for documents or presentations, rather than using blank pages\/slides. It is always easier to ensure accessibility as you go, rather than leaving it all for the end.
