CATALOG OF OFFERINGS
The SUNY Online Teaching Community of Practice relies on the experience and expertise of experienced online SUNY faculty and instructional designers. Our aim is to ensure all members have opportunities to continue developing and improving their knowledge, practices, and expertise in the areas of online teaching and learning that resonate most with them. Offerings are tailored to support all SUNY faculty and staff, ranging from those curious about online education to those looking to develop specialized skills.
To meet our goals, we have developed a model for online education competency development that empowers online practitioners by providing them with a wide breadth and depth of opportunities in readily accessible formats.

THE ONLINE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
This series of four online courses is designed to support the development of competency, expertise, and skills in new and experienced online instructional designers, librarians, and multimedia specialists who work with online faculty and other online learning support professionals. A certificate and digital badge will be awarded upon the successful completion of each course. Completion of all four courses is required to earn a certificate for the Open SUNY Online Instructional Design Program. Courses do not have to be taken in order and/or can be taken as a single competency development activity.
COURSE 1: HELPING FACULTY WITH NEW ONLINE COURSE DEVELOPMENT
This course is designed to help new online instructional designers be confident in their knowledge and abilities in guiding new faculty through the online course development process. Participants discuss how to dispel the initial apprehensions for teaching online, strategies for planning online faculty development experiences, creating and managing online course development milestones, and the practice and procedure for implementing a continuous improvement plan.

COURSE 2: CREATING USEFUL RESOURCES FOR FACULTY
This course is designed to allow participants to discuss tailoring resources for online faculty, including tools, strategies and curating techniques. Techniques for helping online faculty integrate resources into their online courses, such as multimedia, open education resources, and social networking tools are also explored.
Training Modality: Facilitated online course
Duration: Four weeks

COURSE 3: PROFESSIONAL FOUNDATIONS: COLLABORATING, RESEARCHING, AND NETWORKING
This course will explore research on well-established learning theories, and how they apply to online teaching and learning. The focus will be to bring theory to practice, in regard to how we can help faculty create or improve high-quality learning experiences for students. For the second half of the course, participants will identify different strategies and resources for networking to stay current with emerging best practices, and investigate the instructional designer’s role in regard to connecting faculty to on-campus resources, as well as to those of the wider online teaching community. Note: Participation in a small group project is required.

COURSE 4: REVIEW YOUR ONLINE COURSE WITH THE OSCQR RUBRIC
Participants will be introduced to the Open SUNY Course Quality Review (OSCQR) Rubric and process. They will discuss its pedagogical and research foundations, as well as its standards for instructional design and accessibility. Workshop participants will complete a formal course review using OSCQR and recommend improvements and campus implementation strategies and, as a culminating activity, will create a presentation suitable for training their campus faculty on the use of OSCQR. Upon completion of this workshop, successful participants will earn an advanced OSCQR Certified Trainer badge, enabling them to train faculty for their own campuses, as well as for other SUNY institutions.

THE N2OL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM: DESIGNING AN ONLINE COURSE AND PREPARING TO TEACH ONLINE FOR THOSE NEW TO ONLINE LEARNING
The program consists of four sequential “courses” or modules. Assignments and course creation activities are due at regular intervals. To be successful in this program,participants need to be able to devote the necessary time to engage substantively in online activities, in the face-to-face training events, in the independent online course creation activities, and with their campus-based instructional designer for additional feedback and online instructional design support.
This program provides a model of how online courses can be effectively structured and managed. Participants will also learn some foundational theory on effective online teaching and learning. Questions, concerns, and perspectives on what constitutes good practices in the online asynchronous teaching and learning environment will be the focus of online interactions with others in the program. Participants will be led through a step-
by-step process that will help them conceptualize and develop their own online course, including online course structure, organization, sequencing, pacing, learning activities design, as well as options for providing authentic/effective online student assessment, evaluation, and feedback. Participants will also have the opportunity to use the Open SUNY Course Quality Review (OSCQR) Rubric to design their online course, as well as to use it as a self-assessment prior to their first online delivery. Participants will create and share a video tour of their online course as evidence of the core competencies they develop in this program.
In this intensive online and face-to-face competency development program experience, participants will:

- Attend two face-to-face workshops.
- Access/complete self-paced online technical tutorials in Blackboard Learn.
- Work closely with their campus-based online instructional designer to develop and prepare to deliver a blended or online course.
- Prepare a video tour of their completed online course as evidence of their learning.
A digital badge will be awarded upon the successful completion of each course/module. Completion of all four courses/modules is required to earn the certificate for the Open SUNY New to Online Program.

THE OPEN SUNY COURSE QUALITY REVIEW (OSCQR) RUBRIC
With the help of online faculty and staff across the system, Open SUNY has developed an online course design rubric and process that addresses both the instructional design and accessibility of an online course.
The aim of the Open SUNY Course Quality Review (OSCQR) Rubric is to support continuous improvements to the quality and accessibility of online courses, while also providing a system-wide approach to collect data across campuses, institutions, departments, and programs that can be used to inform faculty development, and support large scale online course design review and refresh efforts systematically and consistently.
Competency development opportunities are available for faculty and staff looking to review their own course or become a certified OSCQR Online Course Reviewer.

OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
Open Educational Resources (OERs) are books, media, courses, or learning objects that are licensed to be both free of cost and to allow modifications. The use of OER has the potential to improve access, affordability, and student success. Open SUNY has made the use of OERs a priority through efforts such as Open SUNY Textbooks and Open SUNY Affordable Learning Solutions.
INTRODUCTION TO OER
This course is intended to provide participants with an overview of OERs. It is open to SUNY faculty, librarians, instructional designers, and any interested academic staff who want to learn about OERs. This six-week online course is made up of five modules and a final project. Each module is made up of reading, videos and discussions.
Upon completion of this course, each participant should have a better understanding of OERs and resources that can be used immediately in face to face and/or online instruction.

BLENDED LEARNING
Blended learning (the strategic combination of face-to-face and online learning experiences) is growing in popularity within higher education and K-12 settings around the world. The goal of the BlendKit: Becoming a Blended Learning Designer MOOC is to provide facilitated assistance to faculty members and instructional designers in developing and designing blended courses through (1) a consideration of key issues related to blended learning and (2) practical step-by-step guidance in producing materials for a blended course (e.g., developing design documents, creating content pages, and receiving peer review feedback at one's own institution).

Open SUNY continues to design comprehensive curriculum of competency development paths consisting of certificate programs for online practitioners at all levels in conjunction with the Open SUNY Fellow roles program to support ongoing and continuous learning and improvement in online effectiveness and quality.
