Often the main topic or concept is provided either at the top or in the center of the map, and related concepts are depicted using boxes and circles that are connected by lines to show relationships. Usually, the lines have connecting phrases to explain the relationship.

Concept maps can be used to brainstorm or organize ideas, but it can also be used as a learning assessment. Learners are asked to create a map of the concepts that they know for a specific topic and to show the interrelationship between and among these concepts. The map provides information on how a learner understands the topic and its related dimensions. It also can help to illustrate what a learner already knows about a topic and what they have learned within the course. The concepts in the map can be aligned to the course learning outcomes.

Helpful Links

Concept Maps (The Learning Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

How to Create A Concept Map (YouTube video 2:00 minutes)

Classroom Assessment Technique: Concept Maps (Dr. Karen Rohrbauck Stout, Associate Professor at Western Washington University, YouTube video 6:27 minutes)

Classroom Assessment Techniques: Concept Maps (Professor Michael Silvergieter, Douglas College, Canada, YouTube video, 6:45 minutes)

Articles and Videos on Concept Maps (Institute for Human and Machine Cognition)

Tools for creating Concept Maps

Cmap

Mural

Lucidspark

Miro

And many more …

Concept Maps Concept maps are visual organizers representing relationships among concepts.
