Project Abstract:

This project builds on previous collaborative work between faculty and students at SUNY Oswego and SUNY Broome. Over the life of the project a series of interactive video training tools will be created for students intending to enter a range of medical professions. The tools will focus on improving communication skills (and other soft skills), an essential area where a lack of pedagogically based learning resources has been identified. The interactive video narratives are intended to help prepare medical professionals to better interact with a range of difficult patients. This study aims at providing a more controlled and realistic approach to improving the handling of patient / medical interactions. Previous work in developing similar resources, undertaken by the applicants, has demonstrated that this training can be more successful than previously used conventional training programs around this difficult topic. The interactive videos created for this study will be evaluated in a controlled experimental setting to assess the effectiveness of using these videos as a training tool for medical professionals.
