MVCC Open Physics Lab

Written by buf-zhingoh on . Posted in

Principal Investigator: Derrick Stevens, Mohawk Valley Community College This project will pilot an Open Physics Lab at MVCC for use by any institution or individual. The Open Physics Lab will provide remote access through the web to physical experiments housed at MVCC similar to those used in introductory physics courses. Students and educators will be able to control the experiments remotely and collect data for analysis. As content and courses push to be more open and accessible, laboratory sciences face the problem of bringing the laboratory experience to their students. This project aims to provide that experience in an easily accessible and flexible manner. As these experiments will be fully automated, use may occur from any location at anytime 24/7. In accessing this project, the project coordinators are interested in how the use of a remote lab in physics courses compares to a more traditional setting, and how access to a remote lab may benefit all students in physics courses of any structure. Awarded Grant: $20,000 Principal Investigator: Logan Rath, College at Brockport This project will help share locally created and locally curated information literacy content among SUNY librarians and faculty. This project will have two tiers: development of guidelines for the creation of shareable and adaptable information literacy content as well as development of a platform to facilitate locating and exchanging content. As an end result, this project will support instructional endeavors in all modalities, especially online courses provided through Open SUNY. A Digital “ProofSpace”, Facilitating a Flipped Classroom for Mathematical Proofs

Written by on . Posted in

Principal Investigator: Aaron Heap, Geneseo In many ways, the Introduction to Mathematical Proofs course is a first course in mathematical writing. Analogous courses are offered in math departments throughout the SUNY system. The skills and content a student learns in this course are recalled, reframed, revisited, and revitalized as they continue their mathematical journey. In addition, the material is useful to philosophy, linguistics, and computer science students. To support students’ retention of ideas and methods from this course, we have begun the process of flipping some sections of SUNY Geneseo’s Introduction to Mathematical Proofs using resources external to the SUNY system. We hope to develop our own video and text resources for the course in a way that incentivizes the switch to a flipped format. Further, these videos and associated exercises will become a part of OPEN SUNY through an online “ProofSpace.” Instructors throughout the SUNY system can take advantage of the videos for their Introduction to Mathematical Proofs courses, upper division math courses, or even non-math courses. iMOOC: A Multiuser Platform for International Students to Navigate U.S.-style Virtual Learning Environments

Written by buf-zhingoh on . Posted in

Awarded Grant: $57,000 Principal Investigator: Valeri Chukhlomin, Empire State College This cross-campus collaborative project proposes developing and launching an open access course (iMOOC) with a range of supporting open education resources to prepare international online learners to successfully integrate into virtual learning environments in American universities, including OPEN SUNY. The tentative course title is: “Navigating U.S.-style Virtual Learning Environments: An Introduction to American Culture, Academic System, and Self-Directed Learning”. It will help international students become familiar with and better understand American culture and the academic system, refine critically important skills, learn about virtual learning environments and practice some of the widely utilized in the U.S educational technologies. The course can be an OPEN SUNY tool to attract and retain international online learners; also, to support campus-based international students in U.S. universities. Self-regulation and self-directedness are emphasized, as many international learners come from teacher-centered environments and are not used to student-centered pedagogies employed in many U.S.-based, online courses and programs.
