Principal Investigator: James Kimball, Genesee Community College This project will leverage the motivational learning potential of popular music to enhance the understanding of major social issues in the history of New York State. We request support for planning focused on pedagogical design, content and public partnership development that will lead to a mobile app that ties artistic and scholarly content to museums and cultural institutions around the state through GPS technology. The GPS locater will deliver modularized, on demand content relevant to the cultural/historical site. A web-based platform will accompany the mobile app to offer the same content from any location. This app will leverage both SUNY resources and historical/cultural resources across the state for deep explorations of our state’s history for SUNY students, faculty, K12 students and the general public. This project will also demonstrate the vital role that music plays in understanding social issues. Music, like other art forms, serves to reflect and/or drive public understanding of unfolding questions of equality, democracy and more. This arts-integrated curriculum and the resulting mobile app will provide an “on ramp” to complex social issues for scholars, students and the general public while celebrating the work of SUNY faculty and students. This planning project will assemble a diverse team of scholars, educators, students, cultural leaders, technical specialists and business leaders to ensure that the design and delivery of the resulting technology will have maximum impact upon public dialogue surrounding the enduring questions of New York State history. Furthermore, this platform will be scaled up in subsequent phases to increase public access to many other art collections that lie relatively hidden on SUNY campus across the state. Open SUNY Information Literacy Initiatives

Awarded Grant: $20,000 Principal Investigator: Logan Rath, College at Brockport This project will help share locally created and locally curated information literacy content among SUNY librarians and faculty. This project will have two tiers: development of guidelines for the creation of shareable and adaptable information literacy content as well as development of a platform to facilitate locating and exchanging content. As an end result, this project will support instructional endeavors in all modalities, especially online courses provided through Open SUNY. IL Fox – The Virtual Toolbook for Information Literacy Initial Research

Awarded Grant: $10,000 Principal Investigator: Carol Anne Germain, University at Albany This IITG funded project consists of conducting preliminary research into the development of an online information literacy (IL) toolbook to promote information and digital fluency. At this time there is no comprehensive information resource to support students’ information literacy needs. This tool is designed to fill a void for students as well as faculty at the statewide, national, and international levels. It will incorporate key information literacy concepts at multiple levels. First, it will provide a dictionary defining pertinent words and terms from the information literacy curriculum, such as proximity searching and cyberterrorism. Second, each dictionary definition will link to a supporting encyclopedia entry detailing each term, with an overview, history, and relevant examples. Additionally, the entries will contain sections designed to spark deeper thinking for student exploration by hyperlinking to relevant sources (for example, the page for Fair Use could link to the online video A Fair(y) Use Tale). Lastly, for pedagogical purposes, the resource will provide access to definition-specific lesson plans (best practice examples) to foster sharing and collaboration across SUNY campuses and beyond. Gift and Deselection Manager Online

Awarded Grant: $11,500 Principal Investigator: Mark Sullivan, SUNY Geneseo The Gift & Deselection Manager Online (GDM) will manage and streamline a single library’s workflow for processing gifts and evaluating materials for weeding while aiding in coordinated collection development, last copy detection, and resource sharing. By linking gift processing, conspectus analysis, and deselection among all the SUNY libraries, GDM Online would achieve a high level of Systemness . This system would also allow for enhanced acquisitions through usage data from ILLiad systems, book lists, and circulation statistics. Weeding of collections, on a consortial scale with GDM Online, would provide for a simple way to determine if one library’s discards would fit another library’s subject area. Last Copy could be easily determined and would prevent the loss of a unique item from SUNY libraries. Textbook detection at each library and throughout SUNY would reduce the financial burden for students, families, and SUNY campuses.
