Developmental Model Reform Initiative Expansion through a Digital Companion Course: Creating Reflective Practioners and Engaged Students

Written by buf-zhingoh on . Posted in

Awarded Grant: $24,200 Principal Investigator: Martha Rottman, Rockland Community College RCC is proposing to expand its model of developmental course reform to include two additional community colleges, Westchester and Genesee, to bring the total participating SUNY schools to four. This expansion is aligned with the project’s original replication objective; it broadens the scope so that the impact and effectiveness of marrying technology with reforms in developmental coursework can be determined and how this supports pedagogy, specifically within remedial education; it will strengthen a model geared towards enhanced teaching and learning that is affordable and innovative; and, make recommendations for technology platforms and integration. This is a renewal request for RCC’s 2014-2015 IITG project that is making significant progress towards achieving its original objectives. RCC’s approach of an accelerated course with a digital tool companion (ePortfolio) is aligned with identified best practices for remedial education reform. Yet, until this piloted course, there is no known research on the impacts of utilizing ePortfolio in an accelerated learning environment. RCC’s IITG project is testing if ePortfolios (known to build student reflection skills and motivation) impacts retention and completion for students testing into remedial education. Preliminary results indicate positive results. Co-PI’s and Key Partners: Catherine M. Prior Learning Assessment: A Competency-Based, E-Portfolio Framework

Written by buf-zhingoh on . Posted in

Awarded Grant: $59,750 Principal Investigator: Nan Travers, Empire State College Based on initial pilots at Empire State College of the Global Learning Qualification Framework (GLQF) funded through the Lumina Foundation as an Open SUNY initiative, this proposal seeks to scale-up a proof-of-concept project across additional SUNY campuses. The GLQF will be extended through an e-portfolio environment (Pebble PadTM) to support and scaffold students through a prior learning assessment (PLA) process, provide professional development to faculty on the advisement and support of PLA students, and provide trained evaluators a framework within which to assess college/university-level learning acquired outside the traditional academic environments. Results will be disseminated across SUNY to improve PLA practices to increase student access, support and degree completion across the SUNY system. E-portfolios to Engage Student Veterans at Suffolk County Community College

Written by ATIS Apps on . Posted in

Awarded Grant: $10,000 Principal Investigator: Susan P. Lieberthal, Suffolk Community College Suffolk County Community College will offer e-portfolio training to student veterans that integrates writing, video editing and information literacy. The project will strengthen student academic engagement and result in individualized electronic presentations for student job interviews or college transfer. The Library will provide exclusive access to a space with computers for Student Veterans Association (SVA) members twice per week during which time an e-portfolio consultant will instruct facilitators and students. Faculty and the SVA Advisor will support students in person and through use of short videos. Faculty and other college staff including the Career Services and Cooperative Education directors will also meet with students. ETU professionals will assess progress with each of the three e-portfolio elements: a writing sample, video, and bibliography. Students will demonstrate their e-portfolios and one student representative will travel to CIT with the PI to present outcomes. Cultivating a Composing Process: Growing Critical Thinking and Student Success with ePortfolios

Written by ATIS Apps on . Posted in

Awarded Grant: $19,500 Principal Investigator: Dr. Timothy W. Gerken, Morrisville State College Electronic portfolios (ePortfolios) are well established learning tools that correlate well with student success. With this project, we plan to introduce them at Morrisville State College, targeting two specific areas that reflect barriers to student success within our population – writing skills capacity and development across courses and semesters, and engagement with the writing process within first-year composition courses as it relates to retention. We want to expand the use of ePortfolios to emphasize targeted student success related to composition. We will show how ePortfolios can be used creatively to develop active, integrative learning across our curriculum and over time, through the development of an ePortfolio-based interface enabling students and faculty to trace an individual’s writing strengths, struggles, strategies, & goals. We will also trace the effectiveness of ePortfolios correlated with student success and retention within first-year composition courses.
