How the University at Buffalo celebrates student academic excellence.

Overview
We know so many of our students are engaged in experiences that should be shared and celebrated. What can we do to ensure this happens and that everyone who should be included gets an opportunity to participate? Host a showcase event! This requires being clear on what your overall goals are. To do this, we can simply think through the 5Ws (Who, What, Where, When, Why).
Case Study
At the University of Buffalo (UB), the Experiential Learning Network is tasked annually with coordinating a campus-wide event called The Celebration of Student Academic Excellence Student Showcase. Their goal is to work with designated liaisons from each unit/school across campus to gather nominations for faculty-mentored projects that demonstrate Academic Excellence. Each unit also selects one winner to be presented with an award at a ceremony following the showcase.
This event takes place at the end of the spring semester and is run like a research symposium for 1.5 hours on a Wednesday or Thursday afternoon. Students either hang research posters or set up displays on 4ft tables and prepare a short pitch to share with guests who walk by throughout the event. This is a presidential event at UB, and you can often find all high-level leaders walking around talking to students about their work. Additionally, this event is open to the public. You can find everyone from families, friends, professors and community partners walking around and admiring all the amazing student work on display.
Adaptibility
This play can be adapted to meet the needs of any campus by carefully considering key elements with your team.
- Start by defining the overall goal of the event what you aim to achieve and the impact you hope to create.
- Identify the students who should participate and determine the best strategies for reaching them, ensuring inclusivity and engagement.
- Consider the type of presentations students will showcase and the most effective format for delivering them, whether through posters, panels, performances, or interactive discussions.
- Selecting an appropriate venue is crucial, taking into account accessibility and the intended audience. Additionally, timing is essential; choose a date that aligns well with the academic calendar and allows for maximum participation.
- Think about who should be invited, including faculty, community members, and other stakeholders who can contribute to the event’s success.
- Finally, assess the additional team members or collaborators needed to bring the event to life, ensuring a well-organized and impactful experience for everyone involved.
