Model for establishing a Family Resource Center. The center functions as a place in a school that is set aside for the purpose of making the school accessible to families and encouraging adult involvement in children’s education. Research shows family and community involvement greatly influences student development and achievement. Teacher candidates design and run parent workshops, tutor students, conduct outreach efforts and plan events.
A model for preparing Secondary Education Candidates to work with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The pilot program, established at SUNY College at Old Westbury, spanned from September 2014 to June 2015. Overall framework and elements needed to develop a similar program at other institutions is provided.
Over the past several years, there has been a call for increasing the clinical preparation of teachers across the country. The Teaching Assistant Residency Program at SUNY Empire State College designed to accommodate teacher candidates who are volunteering their time in the Residency placement for the full school year and those employed as Teaching Assistants in partner school districts. Program culminates with Adolescent Level (7-12th) grade certification in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Spanish, French, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science.
